11 Jul 05 Amid ‘food culture’ boom, many can’t cook

On a weekend when other kitchen classrooms at the Culinary Institute of America are packed with adults preparing paella and green mango salad, Chef Greg Zifchak is teaching Chicken Roasting 101.

The breakdown of the traditional family has contributed greatly to this. All of these latchkey kids grown up and do not know how to cook and I am one of them.
It is very easy to not even care about cooking. Restaurants being everywhere and a large assortment of microwavable meals available, it is no wonder in this hectic world people do not cook more, at least here in the US.
This week I am on vacation and decided to learn to make a couple more dishes, since my cooking skills are not that great.
Last night I made real mashed potatoes. That isn’t a big deal to some, but it’s the first time I have EVER made them. Turned out pretty decent.
Twenty years ago food at McDonalds was less healthy than it is today.
People can blame McDonalds all they want about their food being unhealthy. But the problem is not with McDonald’s food, but with peoples eating habits and lack of exercise.
