Its been years since I have actually had a record player.

It’s time to toss out your antivirus software - My ass

There’s been plenty of debate lately that maybe with the release of Windows Vista, we might be able to get away with not using antivirus on our computers. Well I’m about to make an even bolder assertion, that running antivirus or even additional third party security software such as firewalls on your computer makes you even less safe! Now before you start the flaming, hear me out first. [.continue.]

I am not that familiar with this so called expert George Ou, but I must take exception to most of his rambling. First Ou starts by saying antivirus programs are bad since ‘virtually every Antivirus vendor had their share of remote exploits’. This seems to be true with the link he gave. Curious as I am, I checked out the McAfee exploit since that is the product I use. There it is on March 17, 2005 a Library Stack Overflow for the engines prior to version 4400. The thing is version 4400 had been available since December of 2004. So yeah McAfee had an exploit and you would be vulnerable to it if you didn’t keep the software up to date. I really don’t know a piece of software where this would not be the case. Would this make all software programs bad that had exploits? If so, your choice of OS and programs would be rather limited.

The software firewalls are also bad because they also at some point had exploits. I have not seen any data but I am sure just with the antivirus programs that these programs have helped a hell of a lot more than they have hurt. This continues to be the case in my organization. You know seatbelts save lives, but they have also been the cause of deaths in accidents. Should we also stop using seatbelts because of a miniscule percentage of deaths? (more…)

Since your accomplishments are seldom noticed,
and you are rarely thought of, you are expendable.
That doesn’t mean your job isn’t important but if you
were in Star Trek you would be killed off in the first
episode you appeared in.

Ben Wang shoots a space shuttle launch, the Endeavour in November of 2000. This shot is a 5 minute exposure. Five minutes after liftoff the shuttle is about 229 statute miles downrange.
Pretty cool. A larger picture of this can be found here.

How big the earth is really

You really want to know how big the earth is compared to the other planets and the sun?

Proportions - How Small We Are

This topic was something I looked at in an Astronomy class I took last year.
We also had to discuss creating a scale model of the solar system to help appreciate how big it is. If you would use a typical classroom globe of the earth as scale the sun would be 146 feet in diameter, Earth would be 40 feet away from the sun. Pluto would be 3 inches in diameter and 118 miles away from the sun. Alpha Centauri A our next closest star would be 822,400 miles away. That far away if the earth was the size of a classroom globe. It really helps people appreciate how much space is in space.

Season 1 Episode 4

This is my favorite episode from season 1.
While babysitting both Trinity and Mrs. Peterson’s dog, Ricky accidentally gets shot and the dog devours a tray of hash brownies. A vet treats both the dog and Ricky. In order to pay the vet, Ricky and Julian must repossess a lawn tractor owned by a former patient who hasn’t paid the vet’s bill. The Boys successfully recover the tractor — but not before Ricky gets shot for the second time that day.

Season 1 Episode 2

Fed up with all their demands and complaints, Julian tells everyone that he is leaving the trailer park. Ricky, who has been living in Julian’s car on his front lawn, has one week to find a new place to live. Mr. Lahey, the trailer park supervisor, is thrilled to hear of Julian’s imminent departure but when he hears that Ricky won’t be leaving too, his worst nightmare seems about to come true.
Ray is introduced, Ricky’s father.

First episode.
Julian and Rickey get out of jail and back to the trailer park. They have to deal with Cyrus who has moved in to the trailer park.
Good episode that introduces most of the main characters.
