As long as I can remember I have always eaten Red Delicious apples.
Unlike Bryan, I have always been mesmerized by the dark red apples and looked down upon the lighter red and green apples, even when I would get Red Delicious apples that would taste crappy.
I do not think that Red Delicious will be gone soon like the article seems to imply. Red Delicious is such a well known name in apples. Producers could very well modify the Red Delicious to make it a little less red and a little more delicious and still retain its name and some of its market share.
I for one for the first time ever, will pick up some non-Red Delicious apples the next trip to the market.
Consider the fate of America’s favorite apple. It emerged from an Iowa orchard in 1880 as a round, blushed yellow fruit of surpassing sweetness.
But like a figure in a TV makeover show, it was an apple that its handlers could not leave alone. They altered its shape. They made it firmer and more juicy.
